Sorry this reply breaks "threading" but I dunno how to reply directly to

Thanks for your correction, Ralf. I missed it when I checked for it the
first time. Yes: Robert's version DOES include the bugfix patch.

Yes, as Robert Collins pointed out, using the modified binutils I pass
all libtool tests but three: build-relink, build-relink2, and quote.
The build-relink/2 problems are related to the
"shlibpath_overrides_runpath=yes" difficulties reported earlier, and the
ensuing discussion of "wrapper scripts" and "wrapper executables".

Off-topic here; this should be discussed on the libtool list. Let's try
to keep the thread (at least on binutils mailing list) focused
specifically on the proposed patch to binutils.
