I did the C54x port and a tentative ADI SHARC port, both of which deal with
some of the issues you're probably concerned with.
Porting new targets should be significantly easier now that there's support
for non-octet bytes (VLIW).
I'm working on a GDB port for the C54x now (and will be submitting patches
Real Soon Now), so things should be easier there as well.
Specific gas issues should probably go to the binutils list.
