The latter -- edit the source code.

It is not, since it is followed by a clause ( another printf statement in
source code, another msgid in the PO file), which is "unless user specifies
one".
I imagine the program has these printf's in order so that the full sentence
looks like:
printf ("Automatically choose image base for DLLs\n");
printf ("unless user specifies one. ");
Now, I can't simply translate these two strings and have them strung together
in the order above and form an intelligible Turkish sentence.
I need:
printf ("Automatically choose image base for DLLs\n\
unless user specifies one.");
so that I can translate an intelligible Turkish sentence. (minimum
translatable unit?)
I hope this illustrates the problem.
Best regards,
Deniz
