Usually we only add the version number at release time, IIRC?  But
thanks.

Sounds right. GDB has (or should have)the line ``Changes since <last release>''. Then the release engineer gets to tweak it just before the release goes out the door.

If things start refering to the next release before it is out, people get confused.
