Historically this is not a problem. The maintainers of ftp.gnu.org are
not that hasty in deleting old stuff (which is the right way). There are
old releases of autoconf back to 2.7, automake back to 1.0, gettext 0.10
and libtool 1.0. The worst that happens is moving stuff from /gnu to
/old-gnu.

Of course archiving copies separately is not a problem, either. Then you
can write: "Get copies from ftp.gnu.org, or use versions archived here."
