OK, you got us.  You're absolutely right.

I think we've gone far enough on this thread.  If you want to pursue
this, please drop this for now and come back with your redesigned API
for libbfd which can be used going forward.  Pay close attention to
the complex interaction between libbfd and ld.

Please don't expect us to design that API: we don't care.  Please
don't tell us that we can freeze on the current API: we know better.
