differences between mips64-elf and mips-ecoff ?

Howdy,

	What are the differences between the targets mips64-elf and
mips-ecoff?  I don't know what the elf and ecoff parts are for. But if I
compile for a 64bit architecture mips chip will that necessarily mean
that I should build a mips64-elf compiler?
