Have you already built the binutils (i.e. gas and ld with friends) as cross tools. If not do that first. If you have done that, try using configure with --with-gnu-as and --with-gnu-ld, e.g. ./configure --target=i686-pc-linux-gnu --with-gnu-as --with-gnu-ld Noah.
