  But you *have* to either use --with-headers OR symlink .../sys-include
into .../include OR manually place the headers in .../sys-include if your
target headers need fixing.

  So why not use --with-headers, let it copy them into .../sys-include, let
it fix them during the build, and then after installing just delete the
sys-include directory?

  Or place copies of the unfixed headers into .../include and just don't
care that the leftover ones in .../sys-include will be found first, which
would only matter if you wanted to edit your target headers.  How often
does that happen?  It would be a maintenance burden to remember that
editing the headers in .../include wouldn't work because the ones in
.../sys-include would override them, but you wouldn't expect to be doing
that often if at all.
