-O (optimize output file) linker option

Hello,

I have found that there is an -O 'optimize output file' option for the gnu
linker, however, I am having hard time figuring out exact purpose and how it
is being used.

Is it something that eliminates unreferenced code from the final image? I
know there are some linkers that do that (HPUX). Does anybody have any
idea?

Thank you,
Sergey
