I'm sort of coming after the battle here, but it's been observed that gcc build fails "just because" when using path that include ~ Probably when you call configure with --prefix=~/bin the ~ doesn't _always_ get expanded and it all falls apart. Using --prefix=/home/owen/bin would most probably work (I'm confident especially since /usr/local worked already :-) ). /Y ------ Want more information?
