The various --with / --without options

I am new to the cross environment and to building gcc + env as a whole.

being paranoid & schizoid, like a lot of other programmers, I do not want to trust any of the all mighty scripts or at least to understand them. no disrespect intended to the scripts writers. on the contrary, I would be content having 1/10 your knowledge...

In the process of trying to self educate myself in the mysteries of the configure script I have grep'ed in vain for a list of the possibilities of the --with / --without option's which seems to solve so many problems in this forum.

where can I find a decent documentation that will state in a clear and simple way what configuration option I have and what their meaning is?

the end goal is to create a cross-gcc from cygwin to ppc-linux + to build the linux kernel for the new arch. as it can be easily understood from this mailing list I still have some more miles of desert before reaching any water ...
p.s. browsing the net was as futile as anything else.
