"ibuild - a mini portage" for cross-compiling gentoo?

Allistair Tse (liquidx@gentoo.gro) has an interesting page,
http://www-lce.eng.cam.ac.uk/~acnt2/ibuild/
describing the problem of cross-compiling a toolchain and
a linux distribution (in this case, gentoo). He helpfully
includes links to other approaches (e.g. uclibc's Makefile-based approach).
Has anyone else tried Allistaire's ibuild?
I ask because I'd like to ditch my own custom Makefiles
I use to build apps, and start using (and contributing to)
some better-structured approach.

Personally, I find gentoo's approach to building toolchains a bit
icky, so I'd be completely happy to continue using my crosstool.sh
to build the tools :-) but for apps I'd prefer to not reinvent the wheel.
