So what do I place in .../patches/linx-2.4.x/ ??

Better ask Rick! His stuff isn't provided as patches; it's an overlay. You'd need to do a diff -Naur to turn it into a patch... I suspect the kernel guys want his changes submitted in that form, too. - Dan
