Thanks to Dan's log, I finally figured this out. I'm posting this both to explain the weirdness to Dan, to thank him, and to provide a searchable record for the next guy who damages his system the same way I did mine.


The clue was the first non-trivial difference between Dan's log file & mine. Configuring the binutils, mine reported that my x86 was big-endian. It seems that I somehow managed to get PPC headers in /usr/local/include. Cleaning that up fixed the problem, and a lot of other bizarre problems, too.
