Even MS Windoze is more open in this cross-development issue with its available Cygwin
and MinGW runtime environments.... It is not rare that people have crostools for Cygwin
and MinGW hosted on their preferred development hosts.
I don't recall Microsoft kicking in funds or effort to develop Cygwin or MinGW...
Nor gcc. Apple has been spending a lot of money to improve gcc, and most of their patches are of interest to everybody.
Sure, MacOSX isn't totally open source, but that doesn't mean Apple isn't a good citizen. They give lots back. In particular, they hired some very bright lights to help with the tree-ssa work which we're all benefitting from.
