Last time I looked SF only had CVS and that's probably not what you want
for a modern project. Whatever is used to develop that stuff doesn't
really matter for me, I'd prefer SVN for that kind of projects (git is
good for the kernel but not for everything else in the world). But the
important thing is IMHO that Dan's tree _is_ available between the
releases and that it is possible to have a look at what his state is, to
avoid duplicate work. I've today updated the gcc 3.4.4 patches for
3.4.5, but I'm pretty sure Dan already did this, so it is probably
duplicate work, but who knows.
