configure: error: cannot compute sizeof (long double), 77

I get the error:

configure: error: cannot compute sizeof (long double), 77

whilst trying to run demo-x86_64.sh from crosstool-0.38 on
a Debian Sarge, ia32 system (with 64 bit 2.6.15 kernel).

I've tried gcc 3.3.5 and 3.4.4

gcc-3.3 (GCC) 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-13)
gcc-3.4 (GCC) 3.4.4 20050314 (prerelease) (Debian 3.4.3-13)

I found a few vague hints around, but nothing that actually tells me how to fix this ... what should I do ?
