This is my configure settings btw, if it helps any.

../configure \
 --prefix=/usr \
 --enable-kernel=2.4.3 \
 --with-headers=/usr/include \
 --enable-add-ons=libidn,linuxthreads \
 --with-tls \
 --with-__thread \
 --without-cvs \
 --enable-clocale=gnu \
 --disable-profile --disable-debug --without-gd \
 --without-locales \
 $TARGET-slackware-linux

It does sound like an NSS issue. Have you set up your nsswitch.conf?
