Well, fortunately Marc Kleine-Budde was able to reproduce my problem, and 
it went away with the next step of binutils (I'm guessing your build isn't 
identical to mine) ... so (I'll try this tomorrow) I guess the natural 
thing is to up lift arm-unknown-linux-gnueabi to use the .9 binutils -- 
that seemed to work for Marc.
