I am not sufficiently familiar with arm-gcc, but my gut feeling is this patch is likely wrong and trying to pamper around bugs elsewhere in arm-linux (likely you are facing symptoms of arm-gcc's float support being inconsistent across binutils+gcc and inside of gcc).
