Sorry, my bad. My previous post listed all this info but was too long,
I think.

1.) Installed standard Cygwin last week using the setup.exe utility,
following the Installation HOWTO.

2.) Then installed these packages from /pub/cygwin/xfree/xc-4-binaries:

xfree86-4.0-DLLs.tar.bz2
xfree86-4.0-Prog.tar.bz2
xfree86-4.0-Xterm.tar.bz2
xfree86-4.0-Xvfb.tar.bz2
xfree86-4.0-Xwin.tar.bz2
xfree86-4.0-devel.tar.bz2
xfree86-4.0-fonts.tar.bz2
xfree86-4.0-twm.tar.bz2

Didn't mess with startxwin.bat because I read it over and it looked OK
to me. Started startxwin.bat from MS-DOS window. Please read my post
of last week for long details of symptoms:

   http://sources.redhat.com/ml/cygwin-xfree/2001-q1/msg00137.html

Is it possible I should try changing resolution/color depth from
800x600x16 to say 640x480x8 to see if that makes a difference?
Thanks very much for your reply :^)
