X startup problems

I tried to get the xfree running on my NTWS4.0/SP box. I have a Compaq Pro
Workstation, Dual PP200's, 256 MB RAM and an old Matrox Millenium. I have
the lastest CygWin binaries (I ran that neat update utility). I followed the
instructions that came with the distro. I searched and read all of the
threads in the mail archive to no avail. I copied all of the files from the
development code (after reading that it might be needed). I checked the
winxstart.bat and debugged it enough to know it not that batch file. I did
damn near everything I could think of and I am now going to ask for help
before I try this on another machine or just quit and go back to using
Exceed.

I get the following error ( I did search for all of the other messages with
that "error 104" and I tried all of the suggestions gives):

fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server
"127.0.0.1:0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I guess this means that my X server won't start. (Duh!!)
I am at a loss as to why it won't.
So my question is: What is the next step?

Also:
Is the shell script startx actually supposed to work?
Does that SuperProbe have any use? Is it supposed to work?

Thanks,
--Steve
