Alexander Gottwald pointed me in the direction using 'xdpyinfo' to
understand the visual formats being used by the X server. Combined with my
examination of the XonX folks code I was able to get colors displaying
correctly for some screen depths, namely 16 and 32, and possibly 24 bits per
pixel.
I have a screen shot of my remote Gnome session running Netscape with
beautifully correct colors:

While I was fixing things I decided to throw in some dogfood: mouse wheel
scrolling now works :) Of course, mouse wheeling under X has plenty of
caveats, so don't expect all of your applications to magically support the
wheel.
I have uploaded the new binaries and source code to my announcement page:

Please test the server and let me know how it works... I'd really like to
get some success mail before I go to sleep for the night. Don't bother
telling me about failure cases though, cause I'm having a beer. :) Well,
actually I do want to know about the failure cases, but tell me tomorrow :)
Good luck and enjoy,
Harold L Hunt
