I see something different here:

for 6000 it's identical.
for 1596,

$ telnet 127.0.0.1 1596
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
Escape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

So the connection is made, but then dropped.

I don't have a 4144 listening.

Can everyone whos got this problem currrently, try telneting to
127.0.0.1 1596 when the x server is running. Also if a couple of the
working users could, we should be able to rule this out, or give some
data to the developers.
