No. If you don't like to see the error message, you can run it from a
script:

#!/bin/sh
bunzip2 xfree86-4.0.3-devel.tar.bz2
tar xvf xfree86-4.0.3-devel.tar > inst-devel.log 2>&1
# end of script.
----cut here--------
Check the inst-devel.log for "Permission denied" and "Delayed exit from
tar error..."
