laptop connecting to a KDM server, worked yesterday, but not today

KDM platform: debian woody, kdm 2.1.1, samba 2.2.1a

cygwin-XFree86 Platform: Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600,
	Windows 2000, cygwin 1.3.2, cygwin-xfree 4.1.0

We have a strange behaviour, in that a laptop that
was able to have KDM open a login dialog on
its cygwin-xfree86 server yesterday, is unable to open
the dialog today.

The XFree86 session is started from a desktop shortcut,
using the command
	C:\cygwin\usr\X11R6\bin\XWin.exe -screen 0 1024 768 -query
172.21.206.140

What happens, seems to be, that the cygwin-xfree86
server refuses connections from kdm.

But it doesn't really say _why_ they are refused,
neither in the kdm log messages, or on cygwin-xfree86's
console.

The message on the console, is:
AUDIT: Fri Oct 5 11:43:01 2001: 1712 XWin: client 1 rejected from IP
172.21.206.140 port 58694
  Auth name: MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 ID: -1

The messages in /var/log/daemon.log, on the kdm machine,
are:
Oct 5 11:22:37 no-video2 kdm[337]: Cannot convert Internet address
172.21.150.71 to host name
Oct 5 11:22:42 no-video2 kdm[337]: Cannot convert Internet address
172.21.150.71 to host name
Oct 5 11:24:01 no-video2 kdm[24250]: server open failed for
172.21.150.71:0, giving up
Oct 5 11:24:01 no-video2 kdm[337]: Display 172.21.150.71:0 cannot be opened

Does anyone have a clue why things worked yesterday,
and didn't work today?

One thing that has changed, is that the laptop has probably gotten a new IP
number from DHCP today.

This could explain why it's unable to reverse resolve
the address today, but it doesn't seem to be the
critical part of the log messages above.

Is KDM, samba, and cygwin-xfree86 involved in a
complicated three way dance, perhaps...?
(this is just a wild guess...:-) ).
