It turned out that in addition to files
Xaccess,
xdm-config
gdm-conf
I needed to edit file
/usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc
to get access from cygwin/xfree to Linux Mandrake 8.1.
(There were option
[xdmcp]
enable=true
which was significant.) In addition I found following site to be very
useful
