Thanks for the tip.  xdpyinfo tells me I'm running XFree86 version 
4.2.0.  This sure sounds like the problem you describe, though.  I used 
sound as the example because the problem occurs with RealPlayer and web 
sites with sound.  I also know that it happens when I set certain KDE 
configuration options such as fade menus.  Do you think that 4.2.0 may 
still have vestages of the problem?
