Your idea about the alpha channel sounds plausible. I'm just wondering if
something in our visuals description is off... perhaps that could cause the
alpha channel to not work correctly. Did you get a chance to look at the
visuals information that I listed for Cygwin/XFree86 and a commercial X
server in the bug history (dated Mon, 22 Apr 2002 22:36:48):

If someone could take a glance at the visuals (and pixmap formats) and tell
me if they are way off I'd appreciate it.
