X Starts, Then Stops...

Very newbie-ish question, sorry.
When I start X by any of the methods in startup-scripts.tgz, it makes the
display window where obviously everything is supposed to happen, but before
I can even get a good look at it, the blank white window disappears, and the
other scripts run by the startup script report that they can't open display
127.0.0.1:0.0.
Ideas?
