Karl,

It's hard to do this with as little information as you provided, but, as a
hint, you set the prompt in the shell's ${SHELL}rc file (read the man/info
page for the shell, especially the initialization section).  See
/etc/profile.default for examples.
FYI, rxvt works for me with sh (ash), tcsh, and ksh (PDksh), both using
the -e option and making the shell the default in /etc/passwd, and shows
the prompt just fine.
