Well my /etc/rc.d/rc.local has:-

    /usr/X11R6/bin/xdm

This is on Slackware 9.1 but there's no guarantee that is going to be
right for other Linux versions, xdm may be in a different place and/or
you may have a different layout of start-up scripts.
