To get you right: If you click into the Event Test window of xev you do not
get ButtonPress and ButtonRelease events like these?

ButtonPress event, serial 22, synthetic NO, window 0x1600001,

    state 0x0, button 3, same_screen YES
ButtonRelease event, serial 22, synthetic NO, window 0x1600001,
