startx won't start X, after fresh recent install.

... startx won't start X, after fresh install of latest cygwin on fresh XP laptop. Still bashing head on wall.

As previously suggested on this thread, I tried downgrading to 6.8.1/6.8.2 mix.
Same problem. I even tried switching screen res to 1024x768 (since the only other person in the googleverse who's reporting the same error also has 1280x800 screen). Same problem.

Is it possible that this silly MAfee firewall is messing things up? XWin and xinit have been given permission to 'use the internet' many oaths ago, so no warnings are popping up now, but it still doesn't work.
