Dear Jon,
Many thanks for your answer. Actually, I've recently found that the pipe symbol is obtained through the 'AltGr+1' key instead of the 'Alt+1' key in the xterm window. But, interestingly, this is obtained in the reverse order in the bash terminal. I have a common spanish keyboard (with the 'Ñ' key).
Hope this helps for other spanish user.
