Thanks for the bug report and clear reproduction steps.

I can reproduce the problem.

It's a bit disappointing that this has stopped working, after going to the 
trouble to make it work in Xserver 1.6.x. :-(  It's not immediately obvious 
what's changed to make it stop working.
