read not waiting for input

This is probably a FAQ, but I've digested all available documentation and
haven't found the answer.
I'm looking for the reason why 'read' isn't waiting for input from the
keyboard.
Just a simple script ...
#!/bin/sh
echo "Read 1"
read one
echo "Read 2"
read two
# end of script
... will complete without pausing for user input.
Help!
