Well the $ simply means that the share is hidden, by default your hard
disks are available as the hidden administative share C$, D$ etc, but a)
you can change this, and b) you can delete this so you can't rely on it
existing.  There is nothing to stop you sharing these as C and D or tom and
bill etc. if you choose.
