It turns out that the -X option does help quite a bit. Here are some rough
results based on using a stopwatch to time the interval from when I
double-click the bash icon on my desktop until I see a prompt:
20020626 snapshot, no -X: 25.2 sec
20020626 snapshot, with -X: 6.7 sec
1.3.10-1, no -X: 2.1 sec
I didn't retry the 0625 snapshot, but it ran about the same speed without the
-X option.
Does that narrow things down any?

P.S. I can probably build a debug version of the dll, if that would help, but
it may be a few days before I have time.
