$ od -t x1z </usr/bin/ls.exe | head -1

$ . /usr/bin/ls.exe
bash: MZ?: command not found
Seems to me that bash is trying to _source_ your executable. ( $ help
source )
What filesystem are you using?
If not FAT or FAT32 then try "chmod u+x" on the executable.
(IIRC there is some problems regarding chmod on FAT fs'es.)
