If you don't mind the wait, you can wait for the upgrade of base-files,
which hopefully will fix the issue of the poor defaults.

If you are impatient, delete the line that calls "stty erase '^?'" in
/etc/profile, or add a line in your ~/.bash_profile that calls "stty erase
^H". Changing /etc/profile means you will not get automatic updates from
the next base-files release, so I would recommend doing it in ~/.bash_profile.
