And, happily, it does not need to.  Just use the latest version of
Cygwin.  For what you are describing, you only need one Cygwin
installation on your system.

Your position on this issue is famous. :-)


Personally, I disagree. It think Cygwin should allow side-by-side installs.

Since I'm not about to do the work to make Cygwin support side-by-side
installs, then I'm happy to deal with the downfall from the current
behaviour.

Making Altera change their behaviour is no effort at all, really, a
quick call, fire off an email, that's all that it takes. :-)
