That is precisely what you need to debug. There is no reason to think
that a program will run the same way under xterm and as it does when it
is not running under xterm. There are obviously a lot of differences
between running in an X environment (as with xterm) compared to when X
is not active.
Asking this question repeatedly is not going to get you closer to
finding the problem. This is something that you need to track down
yourself.
