Magic disappearing "e"

I have a strange issue. The letter "e" magically disappears in my
cygwin bash terminal.

If I type "e", and only the "e", at the prompt, nothing appears until
I type the next character.

If I type "eeeeee", only the first one "hides". The others appear normally.

Has anyone else seen this?

It happens regardless of the terminal type. It happens whether I use
rxvt or in the Win XP command window screen.

Very strange indeed.
