If you'd be interested in looking at carthage, I'd be very happy to
explain some of its problems. Among them are
- lack of support for Unicode
- fixed SGML declaration
- awful error reporting
but on the other hand it is pretty robust and efficient, and has
features like removing unused element declarations from the compiled
DTD.
Not, I hasten to add, that I `own' carthage, but since no-one else
seems to have any time to spend on it, I try to fly its flag a bit
