FreeBSD's ports collections has a pretty nice setup. It puts all of the
DTD families (DocBook, HTML, etc.) in their own subdirectories of
/usr/local/share/sgml, and keeps a top-level catalog pointed at them.
Since OS X is BSD-derived, following a similar approach seems like a good
idea. You should even be able to use the core ports approach and many of
the FreeBSD ports themselves.
