generating HTML good, generating PDF bad

Subject: DOCBOOK-APPS: generating HTML good, generating PDF bad

  i have a docbook file that generates several chunked pages of HTML
just fine.  when i try to generate PDF, however, it explodes
spectacularly.  i have little idea how to read the lengthy PDF
error dump i get -- is there somewhere an explanation of how
to decode this output to figure out what it's choking on?
