Sorry for being a little bit off topic, but (how) can I use
aspell --mode=sgml from inside GNU Emacs/nxml-mode or GNU
Emacs/psgml-mode? TIA.

I don't know, I don't use emacs. Do any Emacs users know?

I was just trying to set up aspell the other day, but found it's behavior problematic in gnu emacs at least. The documentation explains how to do it.

I decided to use ispell instead. I just have this in my .emacs file (if you use aspell, you change the path below to point to it):

(setq ispell-program-name "/sw/bin/ispell")
