They seem even :-) less documented than the DSSSL ones, which I use
for XML.

Here is what I see in my catalog (automatically created when I install
the Debian docbook-xml package):

-- START SGML CATALOG ENTRY FOR PACKAGE docbook-xml --

-- DocBook XML 3.1.3 DTD --
PUBLIC "-//Norman Walsh//DTD DocBk XML V3.1.3//EN" dtd/docbook-xml/docbookx.dtd
PUBLIC "-//Norman Walsh//ENTITIES DocBk XML Notations V3.1.3//EN" dtd/docbook-xml/dbnotnx.mod
PUBLIC "-//Norman Walsh//ENTITIES DocBk XML Character Entities V3.1.3//EN"	dtd/docbook-xml/dbcentx.mod
PUBLIC "-//Norman Walsh//ELEMENTS DocBk XML Information Pool V3.1.3//EN"	dtd/docbook-xml/dbpoolx.mod
PUBLIC "-//Norman Walsh//ELEMENTS DocBk XML Document Hierarchy V3.1.3//EN"	dtd/docbook-xml/dbhierx.mod
PUBLIC "-//Norman Walsh//ENTITIES DocBk XML Additional General Entities V3.1.3//EN" dtd/docbook-xml/dbgenent.ent

-- Simplified DocBook XML DTD --
PUBLIC "-//Norman Walsh//DTD Simplified DocBk XML V3.1.3.6//EN" dtd/docbook-xml/sdocbook.dtd

...

-- END SGML CATALOG ENTRY FOR PACKAGE docbook-xml --

It depends on your operating system, since there is no standard SGML
environment and, for most systems, you have to do a
<emphasis>lot</emphasis> of work by yourself. For Debian, see
http://www.debian.org/~bortz/SGML-HOWTO/ which covers in detail (I
believe) the subject of DocBook/XML.
